Meaning Behind the Music

After 17 years of Kolohe Kai music, 6 albums, and 75 original songs, it’s time to dig into the Meaning Behind the Music...

I’ve written each song from the depths of my heart, and woven throughout every chapter of this catalog of island reggae music is one common thread: aloha. Aloha for the land (ʻāina), aloha for the ocean (kai), aloha for ourselves, and aloha for the people in our lives.

Whether you’ve been on this journey with me for years or you’re just beginning the voyage, mahalo and welcome to this new video series, Meaning Behind the Music. More songs and stories to come!

Meaning Behind the Music: Day by Day

“Life’s problems can cause so much anxiety, and sometimes it’s hard to stay positive. Taking one day at a time is one way to show aloha to yourself. After all, it’s not kind to make someone anxious about their future, so why do that to yourself?

Watch the video above to discover the inspiration behind “Day By Day” and the timeless source that inspired its message."

Do you love the ocean?

Me too! Kolohe Kai in Hawaiian translates to “Rascal in the Ocean.” Surfing, fishing, and diving have been part of some of the happiest moments in my life. Songs like Cool Down and Heʻe Roa are just a glimpse of the joy the ocean has brought me.

Every time I’m in the water, I’m reminded how powerful, peaceful, and beautiful nature can be. It’s one of the places where I feel most alive, and I hope these songs help you experience a little of that same feeling.
